今日は、英語チャレンジの問3の解説を発表したいと思います。この問題の目的は、句動詞（phrasal verbs）の知識を確認することです。
問３．次の動詞の適切な変化形を使って文の空欄を埋めましょう。

まず、上記の文と関係する、各句動詞の意味を紹介しましょう。

cut down on －量を減らす。特に食べ物、たばこ、お酒

call off － キャンセルする

catch up with － 追い付く

そうですね。句動詞の知識を増やすのに色々な例文を勉強しないといけないと思います。句動詞とその意味だけを暗記するのではなく句動詞の意味と例文を一緒に勉強しておいた方が効果的だと思います。
前提として上記に載っている句動詞の意味が分かっていれば、文の意味が完全に分からなくてもいけると思います。各句動詞と関係するキーワードを探せば、問題を解けると思います。
例えば、
１．
cut down onの場合、食べ物、たばこ、お酒を減らすという意味ですのでeの「alcohol」がキーワードとなります。これは、正解ですのでeの文は、
He’s been drinking a
lot lately, so he really needs to cut
down on alcohol.
となります。
２．
fly upの場合、fly（飛ぶ）が出てきますので地理的な情報のある文を探しましょう。
それは、aです。これは、正解ですのでaの文は、
The summer in
Miyazaki is too hot, so Alex flies up
to Sapporo on vacation every year in the summer.
となります。
３．
put up withの場合、我慢する意味ですのでhの「annoying workmates」とは、一番適切な表現だと思います。 正解ですのでhの文は、
Sometimes we have to
put up with annoying
workmates. That’s life!
となります。
４．
break upの場合、別れる意味ですのでdの「She」と「boyfriend」と組み合わせるのは、ピッタリです。正解ですのでdの文は、
She broke up with her boyfriend
before going to Brazil.
となります。

call offとは、キャンセルする意味ですので行事とか関係する文を探しますとfの「meeting」です。これは、正解ですのでfの文は、
